Edelgard and Hubert had been shrinking down and casting and illusion spell over themselves for months, so that no one would ever find out that they had been sneaking out of the monastery to plan the attack on the monastery with “Those Who Slither in the Dark”. Their teams where all out questing, all except Bernedetta who was hiding away in her room.
They needed her to leave the dorms so they can sneak away unnoticed by their house. So Edelgard sent Bernedetta out to go out on a “bravery walk” to find a bug somewhere and to step on it, to grow her courage. She had assumed it would take Bernedetta a while to overcome her fears and give them plenty of time. Unbeknownst to them, Edelgard has just set into motion the demise of her entire insurrection, and in turn saved the monastery.
